Current Musical Obsession: Makthaverskan
While I usually go for the electronic stuff, every once in a while I feel the need for some angry girl music. Fortunately I stumbled upon Swedish band Makthaverskan, or as I like to call it, "Maktha-something," because my memory is just not enough to grasp that name, which apparently has no real meaning but roughly translates to "a female with a lot of power." So, girl power, you know, kind of like the Spice Girls, if they went through a bad breakup and listened to a lot of
Current Musical Obsession : Damon Albarn's "Everyday Robots"
Damon Albarn is generally awesome. As I'm sure you know, he's the frontman of Blur and Gorillaz. He collaborated with music heavyweights on a benefit album titled "Mali Music" in 2002. This year, he released a solo album titled "Everyday Robots," again calling on his famous friends for support. He stated that the album stemmed from experimentation with old Russian synthesizers. He also said "I'm writing about an empty club. Empty club music." Well, alright. The result i
Current Musical Obsession, by an Old Favorite: Gruff Rhys' "American Interior"
I've already posted a couple of times about Super Furry Animals, one of my very favorite bands, and about Neon Neon. Both groups feature the vocals (and genius) of Gruff Rhys, who also has a handful of solo albums. This year he released an ambitious project called "American Interior," which involves an album, a movie, a book, and an app, all inspired by his ancestor John Evans, who left Wales in 1792 to investigate a common belief at the time that a Native American tribe ha
Current Musical Obsession: N.A.S.A.'s "The Spirit of Apollo"
I know, I know, I have only been posting about music but I guess that's what's been speaking to me of late... at least what's been getting me through the 10 hour work days where I'm pretty much sewing the same bag repeatedly. Well, that and my friends' podcast, which I will surely post about soon! N.A.S.A. (musically) is the brainchild of two musical producers, Squeak E. Clean and DJ Zegon, from LA and Brazil, respectively (standing for North America South America). Their m
Current Musical Obsession: Neon Indian's "Era Extraña"
Months ago my friend Tosten got obsessed with Neon Indian's "Era Extraña" and I was all "It's alright but 'Psychic Chasms' is better." How time can change things. While I'm not sure which album is better, this summer I've been listening to "Era Extraña" on repeat. It just pairs so nicely with warm weather, windows down driving. You can click the image to hear the whole album on YouTube, or listen on Spotify here. #currentmusicalobsession #audio
Current Musical Obsession: "Goodbye Lovers" by Boom Bip
My obsession with Neon Neon clearly led to checking out Boom Bip's work. While I have yet to get as into it as Neon Neon's stuff, I have certainly put a few songs into heavy rotation. This is my top pick thusfar. The music is haunting, and Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand lends his voice, which I've always fancied. Franz Ferdinand has since made their own version of the song, and I didn't make it through without wanting to hear this one instead. Boom Bip, or Bryan Hollon

Current Musical Obsession: Neon Neon
As you will surely come to know, I am a huge fan of Welsh band Super Furry Animals. After years of releasing new music, SFA took a "break" in 2010 to work on solo projects. While frontman Gruff Rhys (who can totally call me) has made some lovely tunes solo, his work with Detroit musician Boom Bip is really my cup of tea. Neon Neon has released two biographical albums. The first, "Stainless Style" is based on the life of automobile visionary John DeLorean. It was "Trick Fo

Current Musical Obsession: Twin Sister
I'll admit, I only found Twin Sister after seeing the new(ish) Veronica Mars movie, in which the singer has a small role (played by Leighton Meester in the TV series.) Apparently V-Mars creator Rob Thomas is into the band and listened to their songs while writing the script. The singer's got an interesting voice and they're heavy on the synth and the more I listen the more I like. Check out their album In Heaven on Spotify as it is so so rad. #audio #currentmusicalobsessio
