Oscars 2014: My favorite and least favorite looks
I'll be honest with you, I don't watch a lot good movies these days. In my opinion, most "good" movies- the kind that get Oscar nods, at least- are tragically sad and in turn just does not really appeal to me at any point in my free time.
But watching the Oscars is a thing, and this year my friend Meghan celebrated her birthday with a cozy Oscar party in pajamas. She made all sorts of delicious hors d'oeuvres, and a delightful gin punch with cucumber and lime. We filled out ballots with our guesses but had all headed home before the end of the lengthy awards show so I still don't know who won the coveted prize- a ceramic bottle from Meghan's new company Mazama, but it definitely wasn't me.
Obviously, my main interest in the Oscars is the fashion. And it was an interesting year, I thought. It looked like a lot of men and women alike were taking risks in their choices. Soooo much velvet.
My favorite gown was an Armani Privé worn by Cate Blanchett. There were multiple gowns that were nude and embroidered and ethereal, but this one is beautifully fit and I love the clear pailettes, sparkling like drops of dew on Blanchett's flawless form.
In a very close second was the head-to-toe look of Lupita Nyong'o. She looked like a modern day Cinderella in her light blue pleated Prada gown, with diamond headband and earrings by Fred Leighton. I would really not mind getting my hands on a cheap version of those earrings!
Other stylish selections include Amy Adams in a simple blue gown by Gucci Premiere, Sandra Bullock in a navy draped sweetheart gown by Alexander McQueen, a radiantly pregnant Kerry Washington in a draped amethyst Jason Wu, Meryl Streep in a matronly but classy as hell Lanvin ensemble. Helen Lasichanh, Pharrell's wife, wore a chic lady tuxedo that looked far better than her husband's shorts.
And I can't ignore the fashion missteps. If Julia Roberts looked frumpy in that Givenchy chantilly frock, can it possibly look good on anyone? I had issues with the proportions of the gowns of Kristen Bell and Charlize Theron, and there are just no words for Whoopi Goldberg, like, ever. Surprisingly, one of my least favorite looks was by J Mendel, who I usually adore, and was worn by Anna Kendrick- it was slashed, slitted, sheer, and backless, which alltogether equals cheap as hell, or the anti-Meryl Streep. And, while I usually enjoy Ellen, clothes are never her strong suit. One glittered velvet ensemble looked straight out of Jareth the Goblin King's closet.
